In the middle of the 19th century, the Moscow province occupied the leading place in the artisanal toy industry. This was facilitated by traditional production and sales and artistic and creative ties with the capital city.

In the south of the Moscow region, a craft for the production of a wooden turning toy has spread. It was most developed in the villages of the Voronovskaya and Krasno-Pakhorskaya volosts of the Podolsky district.

Turning industry flourished here, in forty villages up to 1000 craftsmen worked. Worked traditionally as families, men sharpened toys, women painted and painted. Children were trained in skill, participated in the manufacture of the simplest turned objects.

In 1911, in the village. Babenki Podolsky County creates Warehouse Consumer Society of craftsmen turning, later became a factory - "Polished toy."

The Moscow Region masters created a peculiar technique of making and decorating a turning toy. They were made brightly colored and unpainted (in linen).

The first Russian matryoshka was turned by the turner VP Zvezdochkin. from Podolsky district (village Babenki).

The most common products were baby bottles, pyramids, turntables (whirligig), crockery, dolls “rollers”, fun wheelchairs. Spherical, oval and cylindrical objects became classic: multi-seater balls and eggs, toy liners.

The skill of babensky turners came to virtuosity. Tokar Bulychev N. carved a 48-seater nested doll, and the master Romakhin F.Ye. 100-seat egg.

Brochures (Set of small dishes) were made so miniature that they were placed in a hazelnut shell.

The material used was hardwood and coniferous wood: alder, birch, linden, pine, and juniper. Sharpened from raw material, the semi-finished product was dried in a Russian oven. The bright coloring of the Moscow-based turning toys was determined by dyes - soft powder lithographic paints (canister, magenta, canary crowns, cinnabar, ultramarine, soot). To enhance the brightness, aniline dye was added.

The traditional art of making wooden lathe wooden toys developed by generations of turners, carpenters, painters-painters.

In 1934, in the town of Klimovsk, the Hryvna factory for the production of wooden turning toys was opened, where as it developed, Baben craftsmen moved to the 1950s, bringing their traditions and skills.

Wheelchairs, figures of people and animals, sets of doll furniture, various pyramids, etc. are produced.

In 1972, the Polished Toys factory and the Hryvnia factory merged with the production center in Klimovsk, later transformed into the Open Joint-Stock Company KLIMO, which is the successor and successor to the Babensky folk craft of wooden turning toys. The traditions of manufacturing, the outlines, which are notable for restraint, plasticity, and laconicism, are preserved at the modern level of development of technology and materials and are visible in softly outlined, rounded forms.

In 1995, OAO KLIMO received the status of “Enterprise of Folk Art Crafts of Russia”. Masters remain faithful bearers of traditions that are still alive today.
