Faith was an integral part of the life of all peasants, a person's faith was judged by how carefully he performed the necessary rituals - he attended church, observed fasts, and most importantly, moral norms of behavior. A special article of the peasants' belief is wandering, that is, leaving their native village on a pilgrimage. They left in groups and one by one, with the permission of the peasant community, to various monasteries to pray to the saints. Sometimes a single journey included several traditionally revered shrines in several locations. And some, mostly rich peasants, went to Jerusalem. Before going to the monasteries, we prepared for a long time, saved up money. Already on the way, the peasants maintained their religious attitude: they tried not to have empty conversations and not think about household chores. The purpose of such trips was various reasons: a vow, a successful outcome of important matters, atonement for sins. Thus, a person was involved in the church from birth and carried on his faith until his death. At all times, the Russian peasant humbly lived and worked, despite all the hardships and sorrows, believing that God sees everything. Sometimes the peasants made a decision to change their worldly life and went to a monastery. Although this was an individual or family affair, the community had to give its consent to this, especially if the healthy young peasant had the intention of taking the monastic vows - after all, he was leaving hard peasant work. Proof of the purity of his intentions was required for the community to agree. Sometimes they left secretly, then, already from the monastery, a letter came to his native village, where the deceased asked everyone for forgiveness, sending gifts of monastery work.
