Beschreibung

"A new map of the entire empire of Great Russia", Amsterdam, 1730 - replica size 68 X 48 cm. "A new map of the entire empire of Great Russia", dedicated to the memory of Peter the Great (Peter Alekseevich Romanov, 1672 - 1725), compiled by captured Swedish officers in 1728 and issued in Amsterdam by Rainer and Joshua Ottens in 1730 This map was first engraved and published around 1726 in Amsterdam by the publisher, who hid his name and did not indicate the name of its author. Contemporaries believed that it was composed of captive Swedish officers who were in Russia until the end of the Northern War in 1721. Only in the second half of the 20th century was the name of the author of the map established. This was the captain of the Swedish army, Philippe-Johann Tabbert (1676-1747), who spent 12 years in captivity in Russia. After the signing of the Nishtad peace and liberation, he returned to Sweden, was elevated to nobility and received the name Stralenberg. On the map, the main territory from west to east is occupied by the Russian Empire, and Tartaria, which in the past extended from Europe to the Pacific coast, is marked here as a relatively small country in the southeast, located on the site of present-day Mongolia, northern China and Korea. Actually, it is called on the map: Tartaria Mongalia. The red line on the map divides the empire into two parts: the European part, which at that time was quite firmly controlled by the Romanovs, and the Asian part - the former Tartary, which was part of the defeated and redrawn empire, which at that time was still in the hands of the Tartar kings-khans . However, on this map in the territory of the former Tartaria, "Russia" already appears. Only in 1775 did the old dynasty of khan-kings finally lose the great battle for Tartaria, called in the history books “the peasant uprising of Pugachev”.
